I’m always looking for the point when a pose stops feeling like a pose. Here, it was the almost absent-minded way she gathered the fabric around herself that caught me. Something in the lowered gaze and that small gesture gave the painting its mood. I kept the surroundings dark, allowing the warmth of her skin and the embroidered fabric to emerge gradually from the cool shadows.
